Thematic Report on “The Application of Technology in Banking Operational Risk Management”
To enhance interaction and integrate practical experience into teaching and research, the School of Financial and Banking Technology, University of Finance – Marketing, organized a scientific seminar entitled “The Application of Technology in Banking Operational Risk Management.” The seminar aimed to share insights into the application of information technology in specific commercial banking operations, thereby creating a learning environment for lecturers from the School and banking experts to exchange knowledge and experience. The thematic report was presented in Meeting Room A.303 at the University of Finance – Marketing’s Duc Nhuan Campus, with the active participation of more than 50 lecturers from the School.
Dr. Le Huu Nghia, currently Head of the Internal Audit Department at Vietnam Thuong Tin Commercial Joint Stock Bank, presented the thematic report. He has more than ten years of experience in auditing, legal affairs and compliance, and risk management at various commercial banks.
Representing the School of Financial and Banking Technology were Assoc. Prof. Dr. Nguyen Thi My Linh, Dean of the School; Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tran Thi Thanh Nga, Head of the Department of Banking; Dr. Nguyen Minh Phuc, Head of the Department of Corporate Finance; Dr. Nguyen The Khang, Deputy Head of the Department of Public Finance; and the School’s lecturers.

The discussion focused on several prominent contemporary issues, including:
- The application of machine learning in credit scoring;
- Automated debt classification and loan-loss provisioning;
- AI-powered early warning systems.
Digital transformation in the banking sector is progressing rapidly under the Government’s direction and the State Bank of Vietnam’s implementation requirements. APIs, AI, and Power BI are gradually being applied to various banking activities, including payments, credit appraisal, credit scoring, and default prevention. These technologies enable commercial banks to proactively identify risks and develop solutions to minimize potential losses.

Through the practical insights shared by Dr. Le Huu Nghia, the application of fintech in the banking sector was presented in a more visual, accessible, and comprehensible manner through three specific layers:
- The enabling policy layer;
- The enabling technology layer;
- Fintech activities.

Following Dr. Le Huu Nghia’s presentation, the seminar proceeded to the discussion session. The thematic seminar featured a lively atmosphere as lecturers raised specific questions about the practical application of machine learning in measuring probability of default (PD) and the risks associated with applying APIs to banking operations.

The lecturers strongly agreed on the practical value of applying technology to banking operations and looked forward to similar seminars where they could update their knowledge, exchange ideas, and learn from enterprises’ practical experience.
