From Classroom to Practice: Public Finance Students Gain Firsthand Experience at the Customs Sub-Department of Region II and Tan Cang – Cat Lai Port

In line with its commitment to integrating academic learning with professional practice, the Department of Public Finance, under the Institute of Finance and Banking Technology at the University of Finance – Marketing (UFM), continues to strengthen partnerships with government agencies and enterprises in the logistics, customs, and import-export sectors. These initiatives provide students with opportunities to experience real-world professional environments, thereby enhancing their practical knowledge, professional skills, and career awareness.

As part of these collaborative efforts, students majoring in Customs and Import-Export participated in a field study program at the Customs Sub-Department of Region II and Tan Cang – Cat Lai Port - two important institutions within Vietnam’s customs, logistics, and import-export systems. The program was designed to help students bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge and professional practice while providing them with valuable insights into potential career paths.

At the Customs Sub-Department of Region II, students were introduced to the organizational structure, functions, and responsibilities of the customs authority. They also gained practical insights into customs procedures, tax administration, post-clearance audit activities, and digital transformation in the customs sector. In addition, students had the opportunity to interact with customs officials and professional staff, enabling them to gain a deeper understanding of the working environment, professional requirements, and career opportunities in the field.

Additionally, at Tan Cang – Cat Lai Port, students participated in a “Port Overview” program, through which they learned about port operations, cargo handling and delivery procedures, and the port’s role in the logistics and supply chain system. In particular, visits to the wharf, container yard, inspection area, and CFS warehouse enabled students to observe port operations firsthand. These practical experiences helped them develop a clearer understanding of the interrelationships among customs procedures, logistics operations, and supply chain activities in international trade.

Through collaborative programs with government agencies and enterprises, the Department of Public Finance continues to uphold its training philosophy of “integrating theory with practice.” The Department places learners at the center of the educational process while emphasizing practical experience throughout the curriculum. On-site learning at professional institutions not only reinforces students’ theoretical knowledge but also develops their professional skills, practical problem-solving abilities, and capacity to adapt to the demands of a rapidly changing working environment.

Looking ahead, the Department of Public Finance, under the Institute of Finance and Banking Technology, plans to further expand its network of partnerships with logistics companies, customs brokerage firms, tax agents, and organizations operating in the field of public finance. These partnerships are expected to diversify opportunities for professional practice, field visits, expert seminars, and recruitment, thereby contributing to the continuous improvement of training quality and enhancing graduates’ career prospects.
